The Mattox family stayed in Palmetto Dunes on Hilton Head Island, just a few houses from where my family stayed several years ago. It’s one of my favorite areas for a reason: the peaceful atmosphere, lush scenery, and stunning backdrops make it the perfect vacation spot. Whether you have a view of the ocean, a lagoon, or a golf course, there’s no shortage of beauty here. That evening, the water was an unreal shade of blue, more vibrant than usual. With little ones in the group, I prioritize their energy levels first. We started with big group portraits while the girls were still excited and engaged. These two are the absolute light of their family’s lives. You could see it in every interaction. I always remind parents that kids don’t need to sit still and smile for every shot. In fact, I encourage a little running around. Some of my favorite images from the night were of the girls exploring the beach and giggling as they played in the sand.
Once we captured the whole family, we transitioned into smaller groupings, parents with their daughters and siblings, and some candid moments of just the kids. It was such a relaxed and easygoing session because everyone embraced the natural flow of the evening. If the girls needed a break, we let them run around, and instead of forcing posed smiles, we followed their lead. That’s what makes Hilton Head family photography so fun, capturing the real, joyful moments that reflect a family’s love for one another.

At the end of the session, as the sun dipped lower into the horizon, the Mattox family turned to me and said, ‘This has to become a tradition every year.’ That’s one of the greatest compliments I can receive.
